Cercle Brugge and Thibo Somers have reached an agreement for a contract extension for the Groen-Zwart youth product, until June 2026. The news was announced in Jan Breydel on Saturday afternoon, just before the kick-off of Cercle-Standard.
Thibo Somers extends his stay with Cercle until 2026!
Anyone who thinks of Cercle will undoubtedly also quickly think of Thibo Somers. The 23-year-old attacker has been playing for Cercle since he was eight years old and is a top produc of the Academy. After going through the youth teams, Somers made his debut for Cercle in 2019 away to KRC Genk (1-0). A few months later, Somers scored his first goal against the same side. Week after week, Thibo became more important to Cercle and with his inexhaustible efforts he also won the hearts of the supporters: in 2020 this not only resulted in winning the 48th Pop-Poll, run by the supporters group d'Echte, but later that year he joined Decostere and Vanhoutte in placing his signature on a new contract.

Somers also made an impression on a physical level, just like the entire squad. At a European level, Thibo ranks second, after Olivier Deman, when it comes to sprints (distances covered above 20 km/h). Since the start of the preseasonuntil today, he has also run more than 1000 km, of which 80 have been at a high level of intensity.

These impressive figures are now being rewarded with a new contract. This week Thibo signed a contract extension until June 2026. “I've been at Cercle since I was eight years old. As long as I remember I have known nothing but playing football at the Association. The Groen-Zwart means everything in my life, it has even become my family," says Thibo Somers. “I am also proud of my family. I have been able to show them that I can be effective here and that they continue to give me opportunities. I hope I can do a lot for them in return.”
Sporting director Carlos Avina is also happy that Thibo has signed this extension: “Renewing Thibo's contract was our top priority as he reflects our identity. Not only because of his origins, but also because of his mentality and daily hard work. Thibo is one of the leaders of our team and that is why I am very happy that he will stay with us”.
Congratulations, Thibo!
